8-Day Mount Elgon, Uganda Climbing & Photography Safari

8 Days / 7 Nights
≈ 800 km
Photographic Safari

Safari Overview

Mt. Elgon is Uganda's best-kept trekking secret. A dormant stratovolcano on the Uganda–Kenya border, it holds the world's largest volcanic caldera — 42 km × 40 km — and rises to Wagagai Peak (4,321 m). Less visited than the Rwenzoris, Mt. Elgon rewards the adventurous photographer with dramatic terrain: the sheer Mudange Cliffs (the "Wall of Death"), vast afro-alpine moorland, giant groundsels and lobelias, and the extraordinary caldera rim panorama. This 8-day photographic climbing safari ascends via the challenging Sasa Trail.

Photography Tips

Afro-alpine moorland photography is all about scale — include giant lobelias in the foreground against the volcanic skyline. Use a 16–24 mm ultra-wide. On summit day, arrive at dawn (5:00 AM) for above-the-clouds light. Cold temperatures will drain batteries faster — carry 4+ charged batteries in inner pockets. A circular polarizer dramatically enhances the caldera views.
