Photography Tips

Lake Bunyonyi at dawn is one of Uganda's most photogenic scenes — shoot from the water in a canoe using 16–35 mm for terraced hillside reflections. For Mgahinga's Virunga volcano panorama use 24–70 mm at f/8 on a clear morning. Golden monkeys' vivid coats work best in soft bamboo-filtered light — avoid harsh midday shooting.

About Lake Bunyonyi & Akampene Island: Africa’s second-deepest lake, surrounded by terraced green hills. 29 islands create dreamlike landscapes; Akampene Island is a haunting reminder of cultural traditions.

Akampene – The Island of Punishment

Among the Bakiga tribe, it was taboo for girls to become pregnant before marriage. Pregnant girls were abandoned on the small Akampene Island to starve. However, some survived, attracting men seeking women who required no dowry. This practice ceased in the 1940s, likely due to missionary influence and the establishment of a hospital for leprosy patients on nearby islands, which changed societal attitudes towards unmarried mothers.
