Akampene – The Island of Punishment
Among the Bakiga tribe, it was taboo for girls to become pregnant before marriage. Pregnant girls were abandoned on the small Akampene Island to starve. However, some survived, attracting men seeking women who required no dowry. This practice ceased in the 1940s, likely due to missionary influence and the establishment of a hospital for leprosy patients on nearby islands, which changed societal attitudes towards unmarried mothers.
