About Namugongo & Entebbe
Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, 12 km east of Kampala, marks where 45
young men — 22 of them canonised by Pope Paul VI — were executed between 1885 and
1887 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II for refusing to renounce Christianity. The
Catholic and Anglican shrines draw over 3 million pilgrims annually for the June 3
feast day.
Entebbe, 38 km southwest on Lake Victoria's northern shore, was
Uganda's colonial capital. Its gracious botanical gardens — established in 1898 —
include the lakeside lawn where scenes from the 1951 film adaptation of "The African
Queen" were rehearsed, and feature some of East Africa's most remarkable tropical
specimens.

1 — Kampala City Hills Photography Tour
08:00 AM — Kampala Hills Circuit
Begin with the Uganda Museum on Kitante
Road — Uganda's premier ethnographic collection, rich in ceremonial instruments,
traditional crafts, and historical photography. Best light for interior exhibits
in the morning.
Move to the hilltop circuit: Kasubi Royal
Tombs (UNESCO), Gaddafi Mosque (minaret panoramas),
Namirembe Cathedral, and Rubaga Cathedral. Each
sits on a different Kampala hill, delivering distinct skyline perspectives
throughout the day.
Photo Tip — Hill-to-Hill
Panoramas
From each hilltop you can photograph the others —
mosque dome framed by cathedral spires, green hills rolling into the horizon. A
24–70mm covers most of these compositions; bring a ND filter for sky-balanced
late-afternoon exposures.

2Day
2 — Namugongo Martyrs Shrine & Eastern Kampala
08:30 AM — Departure for
Namugongo
Drive east from Kampala to the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine.
Visit both the Catholic Shrine (modern circular basilica
inspired by the traditional royal kraal used by Kabaka Mwanga) and the nearby
Anglican Shrine (reed-walled church on the martyrdom site).
Photograph the circular stonework, flame eternal, murals
depicting the martyrdom, pilgrims' offerings, and the powerful contrast of sacred
space and lush tropical landscape surrounding the site.

Circular Basilica
The Catholic basilica's internal circular nave
creates a natural leading-line composition from the entrance toward the altar —
shoot from low with a 16mm for a dramatic architectural sweep. The glass doors
and gardens create compelling exterior reflections in soft morning light.

3Day
3 — Entebbe Botanical Gardens & Lake Victoria Waterfront
08:00 AM — Drive to Entebbe (45
min)
Early morning drive south to Entebbe. Begin at the
Entebbe Botanical Gardens — 40 ha of manicured colonial-era
grounds sloping down to Lake Victoria. The mist off the lake in the early
morning creates extraordinary soft-light conditions through the canopy.
Photograph towering fig trees, exotic palms, the lake
shoreline with papyrus reeds, African fish eagles overhead, and the green lawns that
frame the water's edge. Midday: the Entebbe waterfront and
traditional fishing landing sites — colourful wooden boats, nets on the water, and
fishermen at work.
Photo Tip — Botanical Gardens
Light
Arrive before 09:00 for the best light — the
easterly sun angles through large-canopy specimens creating volumetric rays. The
old fig trees with their aerial root networks are extraordinary subjects. CPL
filter recommended to maximise leaf colour saturation.
Late afternoon: optional return drive to Kampala, or transfer
to Entebbe Airport. Meals: B, L included.
