About Namugongo & Entebbe

Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, 12 km east of Kampala, marks where 45 young men — 22 of them canonised by Pope Paul VI — were executed between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II for refusing to renounce Christianity. The Catholic and Anglican shrines draw over 3 million pilgrims annually for the June 3 feast day.

Entebbe, 38 km southwest on Lake Victoria's northern shore, was Uganda's colonial capital. Its gracious botanical gardens — established in 1898 — include the lakeside lawn where scenes from the 1951 film adaptation of "The African Queen" were rehearsed, and feature some of East Africa's most remarkable tropical specimens.
