About Kampala

Kampala — meaning "hill of the impala" — sprawls across seven hills above Lake Victoria's northern shore. Capital since independence in 1962, it blends Buganda royal heritage, East African trading culture, colonial British architecture, and a modern creative energy. Each hill tells a different story: Kasubi holds the bones of four Kabaka kings; Namirembe and Rubaga are rival Christian cathedrals; Old Kampala is crowned by the Gaddafi Mosque. The Bahá'í Temple on Kikaya Hill is one of only eight Continental Houses of Worship in the world.

Detailed Itinerary

1Day 1 — The Seven Hills: Mosques, Tombs & Temples

07:30 AM — Hotel Pickup

Your guide collects you from your Kampala hotel. Begin the day with the Uganda Museum — Ugandan cultural artefacts and tribal context for the city you're about to photograph.

Mid-morning: Kasubi Royal Tombs on Kasubi Hill — the largest existing royal palace of the Buganda Kingdom and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The thatched architecture, ritual space and filtered interior light make this one of Kampala's most rewarding interiors to photograph. Respectful dress and camera etiquette required.

Photo Tip — Kasubi Interior

The reed columns and ceiling bark-cloth create beautiful textural layers in available light. Use a wide prime at f/1.8 and raise ISO to 1600 for clean interiors without a flash. Ask your guide about permitted angles.

Afternoon: Gaddafi National Mosque (Old Kampala Hill) — East Africa's largest mosque. Climb the minaret for the definitive 360° Kampala panorama. Late afternoon: Bahá'í Temple on Kikaya Hill — its modernist concrete dome against the Kampala skyline is a rarely photographed architectural gem. Meals: L included.

2Day 2 — Cathedrals, Markets & Street Photography

08:00 AM — Rubaga Cathedral

Start with Rubaga Cathedral on Rubaga Hill — the twin-towered Catholic cathedral with sweeping views of Kampala from its terrace. Morning light from the east gives beautiful directional illumination.

Continue to Namirembe Cathedral — the Anglican hilltop answer to Rubaga, with its distinctive red-and-white brick and vertiginous panoramic steps. Walk the old Kampala city centre — colonial arcades, street vendors, matatu ranks — for authentic documentary street photography.

Photo Tip — Owino Market

Owino is one of Africa's largest open markets — a sensory overload of colour, texture, and human energy. Work with a wide-angle at hip height for candid street frames, or ask vendors for portraits in exchange for sharing your screen. Your guide will introduce you and manage any sensitivities.

Afternoon: Owino Market — documentary photography of fabric, fresh produce, and city commerce in its most concentrated form. Optional: Nakasero Market for a more curated, fruit-and-flower aesthetic. Return to your hotel late afternoon.
