Wildlife You May Photograph
About Ngamba Island
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, situated 23 km from Entebbe on Lake Victoria,
is a refuge for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees. Managed by the Chimpanzee Trust,
the island provides 100 acres of forested habitat where chimps live in social
groups as closely natural as possible.
Visitors access a raised feeding platform to observe and photograph chimps as
caretakers provide fruits twice daily. The relaxed atmosphere and close proximity
make this one of Africa's most intimate chimpanzee photography experiences.
Detailed Itinerary
1
Day 1 — Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC)
09:00 AM — UWEC Guided Walk
Arrive at Entebbe's UWEC for a full-day guided wildlife
photography walk through one of East Africa's premier zoological and
conservation centers.
The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre houses rescued and confiscated
wildlife in spacious, natural enclosures. Lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, rhinos,
and dozens of primate species can be photographed in conditions that allow
thoughtful compositions without the unpredictability of open wilderness. A
professional guide assists with positioning and behavioral anticipation.
Photography Notes — UWEC
Semi-natural habitats allow closer compositions
than most wild safari situations. Bring 70–200mm for enclosure portraits, and a
wide angle for environmental context shots showing Uganda's landscape behind the
animals.
Overnight in Entebbe. Meals: Lunch &
Dinner included.

Day 2 — Speedboat to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary
08:00 AM — Boat Departure from
Entebbe
Board a speedboat at Entebbe marina for a scenic 45-minute
ride across Lake Victoria. Photographing the open lake, island-dotted horizon,
and fishermen en route.
Arrive at Ngamba Island and meet the chimps. During the morning and
afternoon feeding sessions, 50+ chimpanzees emerge from the forest to a raised
feeding platform where caretakers distribute food. Visitors photograph from the
platform, often just 2–3 metres from the chimps.

Photography Tips
The feeding platform at Ngamba provides consistent, close-range compositions with
excellent subject isolation.
Use a fast aperture (f/2.8) for shallow depth of field portraits. Morning feedings
offer softer light
filtering through the forest canopy. On the boat crossing, lie flat and shoot low
across the water surface
for dramatic wide-angle lake perspectives.
