Safari Overview
Lake Mburo National Park sits just 3 hours from Kampala and offers
one of Uganda's most diverse and accessible photographic safari experiences. Unlike
Uganda's other parks, Lake Mburo allows walking safaris among
zebras, impala, and eland — a uniquely intimate approach to wildlife photography.
Combine this with a boat cruise through the lake's hippo- and
crocodile-rich shores and a full game drive through acacia woodland savannahs for a
complete 3-day photographic portfolio.

Wildlife You May Photograph
About Lake Mburo
Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda's smallest savannah national park, covering
370 km² of lakelands, swamps, and acacia woodland. Five lakes lie within the
park — Lake Mburo being the largest — creating a rich mosaic of habitats that
support over 350 bird species and a diverse mammal community.
The park is uniquely accessible for walking safari — a rare privilege in East
Africa where armed rangers escort you through open grassland among plains game.
This allows intimate wildlife portraits impossible to achieve from a vehicle.
Detailed Itinerary
1
Day 1 — Kampala to Lake Mburo: Boat Cruise
07:00 AM — Departure from
Kampala
Drive south-west through rolling hills, passing the
Equator line for a photo stop before continuing to Lake Mburo (~3 hours).
Arrive at Lake Mburo for lunch at one of the park's lakeside lodges. The afternoon
is dedicated to a boat cruise on Lake Mburo — gliding through hippo
pods, past basking crocodiles, and alongside herons, kingfishers, and
water-associated birds. The flat, still water creates perfect reflection photography
opportunities.
Photo Tip — Boat Cruise
Use a 100–400mm for hippos and birds from the
boat. The afternoon light (3–6 PM) creates warm golden tones across the lake
surface. A polarizer reduces glare from water reflections.
Evening game drive returning to the lodge. Overnight at Lake
Mburo. Meals: L, D included.
2
Day 2 — Walking Safari & Full Day Game Drives
06:00 AM — Early Morning Game
Drive
Sunrise game drive through the acacia woodlands for the
best wildlife activity and light conditions of the day.
The highlight of the day is the walking safari — a unique Lake
Mburo experience where an armed ranger leads you on foot through the open
grasslands. Get genuinely close to zebras, impala, and eland for low-angle,
eye-level wildlife portraits. The open terrain allows unobstructed compositions with
the savannah stretching to the horizon.
Walking Safari Experience
- Approach zebras on foot for
intimate portraits
- Track animal signs with an
expert ranger guide
- Morning and afternoon light
across open savannah
Night Game Drive (Optional)
As darkness falls, a spotlight-guided night drive
reveals nocturnal species: genets, civets, leopards, and bush babies. High ISO
capability essential — bring your fastest lens.
Overnight at Lake Mburo. Meals: B, L, D
included.

Day 3 — Morning Game Drive & Return to Kampala
Final sunrise game drive through the park's most
productive wildlife zones before breakfast. Depart for Kampala mid-morning with
optional Equator stop, arriving late afternoon.

Photography Tips
Lake Mburo's open acacia woodland creates beautiful bokeh backgrounds for animal
portraits.
During the walking safari, crouch low to get eye-level shots of zebras and impala —
the
wide open sky perspective transforms an ordinary safari shot into an extraordinary
image.
The boat cruise offers perfect golden-hour reflections from 4:30 PM onwards.
