🎯 Target Species: Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Shelley’s Sunbird, White-starred Robin, and Stripe-breasted Tit.
Overnight & Meal Plan:
Day 6: Full Day Birding in Buhoma
Background – Forest Interior
Buhoma’s trail network allows deep access into the forest interior, where understory and canopy specialists thrive in the dense vegetation and near forest streams.
Activity Detail
A full day dedicated to the trail systems. You will walk slowly, focusing on calls and movements within the mid-story and canopy. This is a prime opportunity for photography using a shallow depth of field to isolate birds against the dense forest backdrop.
🎯 Target Species: African Green Broadbill, Grauer’s Warbler, Rwenzori Batis, and Archer’s Robin-Chat.
Overnight & Meal Plan:
Day 7: Morning Birding Trails in Buhoma → Transfer to Ruhija
Background – Transitional Habitats
Buhoma (lower elevation) and Ruhija (higher elevation) offer different bird suites. Today's trails like Nkwenda offer a final chance at Buhoma's riverine specialists before climbing to the mist-covered heights of Ruhija.
Activity Detail
Morning birding on the Buhoma trails focuses on any missed specialists. Following lunch, you will transfer to the Ruhija sector. The habitat shifts to cooler, higher-altitude montane forest, introducing new Albertine Rift endemics.
Day 8: Morning Birding in Buhoma & Transfer to Ruhija
Background – The Montane Shift
This day bridges the two sectors, maximizing time in the forest edge paths which are often biodiversity hotspots for both lower and higher-altitude species.
Activity Detail
Guided birding along the forest edge paths in the morning. By late morning, you proceed with the drive to Ruhija. The afternoon involves settling in and beginning explorations of the Ruhija forest tracks where the air is thinner and the bird calls differ significantly from the valley below.
Day 9: Full Day Birding in Mubwindi Swamp
Background – Mubwindi Swamp
Mubwindi is a high-altitude montane swamp. Its shallow channels and moss-covered logs make it a unique niche within Bwindi, essential for specific understory specialists.
Activity Detail
A specialized trek to the swamp. This is often considered the most rewarding birding day of the safari. The quiet, undisturbed nature of the swamp allows for exceptional photography of shy species near the water's edge and within the surrounding dense thickets.
Day 10: Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Background – Mgahinga (Afro-montane & Alpine Zones)
Mgahinga is distinctly mountainous, sitting on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. It offers a more open landscape compared to Bwindi, featuring dramatic peaks, bamboo belts, and giant lobelias.
