Mount Luigi di Savoia (4,627 m) is one of the six major massifs of the Rwenzori Mountains, famously nicknamed the “Mountains of the Moon.”

From the iridescent Rwenzori Turaco in the canopy to sunbirds feeding on alpine flowers, every day offers new images and discoveries.

With all necessary climbing gear included (ropes, crampons, ice axes, etc.), all you need is your spirit of adventure — and your camera.

First described by Ptolemy in AD 150 as the fabled “Mountains of the Moon,” this journey takes you through surreal vegetation zones, 217 bird species (including 19 Albertine Rift endemics), glacier-fed lakes, and rare mammals. Expect crimsonwings flashing in the forest, turacos soaring over peaks, and glaciers gleaming above giant groundsels.

This is more than a trek. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime odyssey into Africa’s most iconic mountains.

About the Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park, straddling the Uganda–Congo border, protects Africa’s third-highest peak — Margherita (5,109 m) — and a rugged 120 km-long glacier-tipped range.

Wildlife: 70 mammals, 217 bird species, 19 Albertine Rift endemics.
Vegetation Zones: Montane forest, bamboo, Afro-alpine moorland, glaciers.
Unique Flora: Giant lobelias and groundsels up to 10 m tall.
Status: UNESCO World Heritage Site (1994) & Ramsar Site (2008).
History: Named the “Mountains of the Moon” by Ptolemy (AD 150); Henry Stanley mapped them in 1888.
Best Climbing Season: December–February and May–August.

Full Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe — Transfer to Kasese (1,600 m)

Arrival in Uganda. After immigration and baggage formalities, transfer across lush countryside toward Kasese, the gateway to the Rwenzori range. Along the drive you’ll cross varied farmland and small towns — a gentle introduction to Uganda’s landscapes.
Overnight: Kasese | Dinner included

Day 2: Nyakalengija → Nyabitaba Camp (2,650 m, ~10 km, 4–5 hrs)

Trail ascends through Bakonjo villages, coffee plantations, and montane forest. Expect river crossings and a steady uphill through mossy forest to Nyabitaba Camp.

🎯 Target Birds: Rwenzori Turaco, Archer’s Robin-Chat, Rwenzori Batis, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, Handsome Francolin, Long-eared Owl.

Day 3: Nyabitaba → John Matte Hut (3,350 m, ~7 hrs)

Climb through bamboo and giant heather, crossing the Kurt Shafer Bridge. Expect mossy rocks and bogs before reaching John Matte Hut.

Start at 4:00 a.m. for the technical ascent to Margherita Peak via Stanley Glacier. After summiting, descend via Scott-Elliot Pass to Kitandara Hut, beside twin alpine lakes.

Day 9: Trek to Lake Mahoma (2,651 m) → Return to Nyakalengija

Scientists in an inflatable boat on Lake Mahoma in the Rwenzori Mountains studying glacial retreat and lake pollen sedments . Recent data (Project Pressure, 2024) show the melting point at or above the Stanley Plateau glacier, making ice accumulation nearly impossible and suggesting possible disappearance within decades. Short trek to Lake Mahoma, the lowest and most accessible Rwenzori lake.
