The Bakiga Nation

The Kiga people, or Abakiga, are an ethnic group of mainly agriculturalists living in northern Rwanda and south western Uganda in the beautiful hills of Kigezi sub region.

The Bakiga speak a Bantu language called Rukiga. They are known as hard hardworking and tough people that can unknowingly make formidable enemies.

The stamina and strength of the Bakinga is displayed in their dance called the Ekizino. Ekizino is a very vigorous dance that involves jumping and stamping with a lot of energy. Women dance along with an elegant display of their arms.

The Bakiga are also known for their skills in playing various traditional musical instruments.  Top on the list is Enanga (trough zither) Enanga has eight strings which run above a wooden trough and is tuned in a pentatonic scale. Enanga is mainly a story-telling or poem reciting instrument.

Among the Bakiga, when an unmarried girl got pregnant, she would be taken to a forest, tied to a tree, and left to be devoured by animals or thrown over a cliff atop Kisiizi Falls.   Around Lake Bunyonyi, the unfortunate pregnant girls were dumped at a tiny island called Akampene.
