The ancient Nyero Rock Paintings in Kumi District are considered the finest of several rock art sites in East Africa,
Nyero rock paintings date to before 1250 CE and were first documented around 1913 by researchers who described them as of “geometric nature.”
The red pigment of the art work is spread across east, central and parts of southern Africa, matching the distribution of the Late Stone Age hunter-gatherer culture.
The art is attributed to Batwa (Twa) / Pygmies hunter-gatherers who are today found in small groups near the Rwanda/Uganda border and eastern Congo. The Twa communities are thought to have lived in the area and probably moved on due to the arrival of the present inhabitants- Nilotic, Luo, and Bantu groups.
